Marsh Tacky Beach Races on Coligny Beach

Races start at 1:00 PM at the Holiday Inn located at 1 South Forest Beach Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.

Racing Marsh Tackies on the beach was a wintertime tradition after each year's harvests with the winner taking home bragging rights. The races have returned to Hilton Head Island. Come meet our State Heritage Horse and learn about its unique role in South Carolina history. Master of Ceremonies for the 2012 races is S.C. Agricultural Commissioner, Hugh Weathers. Event is free. Donations accepted.

St. Jude "Fun in the Sun" Benefit Trail Ride
 

St. Jude’s "Fun in the Sun" Benefit Trail Ride will take place on Sat. May 5, 2012 from 9:00 am – noon at Camden, SC Hunt Country.   Proceeds from the ride will benefit Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  The entry fee is a $35.00 donation.

St. Jude has been named the number 1 pediatric cancer care hospital in the country by Parents magazine.  The hospital treats an average of 7,800 patients a year and sees more than 260 patients each day.  St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent in 1962 to 80 percent today. They were the first to develop a cure for sickle cell disease with a bone marrow transplant and now have one of the largest pediatric sickle cell programs in the country.  The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.7 million.  The cost is primarily covered by public contributions.  All treatment for pediatric patients at St. Jude is free. The South Carolina Horsemen's Council Annual Expo will be held at the S.C. Equine Park in Camden, SC starting at 9:30 am. It will be a day filled with horses, nationally known clinicians, vendors, and many horsey events.

THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF THE MARSH TACKY HORSE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) – University of South Carolina Beaufort - Hilton Head Island Pineland Station, Suite 304A

THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF THE MARSH TACKY HORSE IN SOUTH CAROLINA will be presented by Jackie McFadden at the Hilton Head Island, Pineland Station, Suite 304 A on Monday 02/20/2012 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
 
Instructor: JACKIE MCFADDEN is the secretary of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association and is an Associate Professor and Reference Librarian at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She and colleague Patricia Stafford are researching the Marsh Tacky for a manuscript tracing the history and significance of the Marsh Tacky horse in South Carolina.
 
OLLI at USCB provides quality, not-for-credit, educational opportunities and experiences to the citizens of the Lowcountry.  Any adult who is interested in lifelong learning is welcome to enroll at any time.
