20 of our Rare Equines will be competing in the Third Annual Beach Races!

 Stallion Class

DP

DP is a 6-year-old grulla stallion belonging to David Grant. DP has a very thick double mane that makes him a very handsome horse, but he has more than just good looks going for him. His gentle and quiet disposition is second to none. He is infallible in most every situation he is put into, whether it be dragging a 250-pound hog out of the woods, holding to gunfire, posing for photos or giving pony rides. He is the face of Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors and has been featured at numerous exhibitions, festivals and equine events. 
 

Sabata

 
 
Sabata is an 8-year-old grulla stallion used for deer and hog hunting and trail riding. Sabata has competed in hunter pace events.
Mare Class
 
Biff 
 
 
Biff is a 6-year-old bay mare bred by Arnold Postell.  She is out of Dapper Dan and Little Lucy who died when Biff was 4 months old. She is a great trail horse and is soon to be competing in upcoming ACTHA rides. She has had one baby by Shrimp Boy born in March 2010 and will be bred again in the spring to Tacky Blue.
 
 
 Bullet
 
 
Bullet is a 7-year-old grulla mare used for hog hunting and trail riding. Bullet was the 1st Marshy Tacky to be put on display at Honey Horn Plantation on Hilton Head Island.  
Molly
 

Molly is a 22-year-old bay mare, a Honorary Member of three Daughters of the American Revolution organizations in South Carolina, and serves as a mount for the Lee County Light Horse cavalry unit. She started her life as a plow & wagon horse for a Gullah family, then was used for deer & hog hunting, then pleasure riding, and now a cavalry mount. She has served in search and rescue activities. She maintains the wild horse instincts and takes every job seriously.

 

Noley

 
Noley is a 5-year-old dark bay mare bred by Steve Blocker. She is out of McKenzie/Laney and is owned by Troy Smoak. Troy raised, broke and trained Noley himself. She is not a gun horse but is used for many public events that demands a quiet horse, parades, shows, pulling carts and for simply pleasure riding on sunny afternoons. Troy used her for the last 2 years in the very competitive sport of Team Roping as an accomplished "heel" horse. This will be Noley's second Marsh Tacky race.
Red Rocket

 
Rocket is a 5-year-old Red Dun Marsh Tacky mare out of Tacky Blue and Patty Cake (Ravenel Stock).  Red Rocket has competed in American Competitive Trail Horse Association Rides, Hilton Head Beach Races, and just trail rides. Red Rocket was also in the Premier Showing of Marsh Tackies at the Fall Steeplechase in Aiken, SC in Oct. 2010.  Red Rocket belongs to Susan Day.
 

Salt Creek Annie

Salt Creek Annie is a 16-year-old gray grulla, mare ridden by Lauren Simons. Annie is an awesome barrel racer, trail horse, and hog hunter. She is real sweet but when it is time to go, she goes! This is her second Marsh Tacky race!

 

Southern Belle

 
 
Southern Belle is a 3-year-old black mare from Heritage Stables in Timmonsville, SC.  She is great for hog hunting and pleasure riding. Southern Belle lived up to her name to start with, she didn't want to get dirty, but now she is ready for whatever comes her way.  Anyone can ride her, she’s so laid back, she’s a big pet.

Southern Breeze

Breeze is a 3-year-old grulla filly belonging to David Grant. She was recently featured alongside her sire, DP, at the SC Horseman Council Equine Expo in Camden, SC. She was also shown in the Premier Showing of Marsh Tackies at the Fall Steeplechase in Aiken, SC in Oct. 2010. She has DP's quiet, gentle disposition and is a very willing partner under saddle. She is a newcomer to the Hilton Head Beach Races.

Sully

 
Sully is a 5-year-old buckskin mare from Heritage Stables in Timmonsville, SC. She is new to hog hunting, but she handles it like she has done it forever. She has her own tee-berry shuffle. 
 

Tarbaby

 
 
Tarbaby is a 3 1/2-year-old black mare from DP Lowther stock. She is a good all around riding horse. 

  

 Gelding Class 

Bama

 

Sweet Home Alabama ("Bama") is a 5-year-old red dun gelding owned and ridden by Leighton Bell. Bama's job in life is to take care of Leighton Bell. (Bama needs a hay raise because this is not always an easy task.) Bama was featured in the Premier Showing of Marsh Tackies at the Fall Steeplechase in Aiken, SC in Oct. 2010 and is a newcomer to the Hilton Head Beach Races.

Chester

 
Chester is a 7-year-old chestnut sorrel gelding bred by DP Lowther. This is Chester’s third race. 

 

 

Houston

 
 
Houston is a 7-year-old grulla gelding owned by Wendy Soltis.  He will be ridden by Jody Platt, who was his original owner. Houston is in training to become a competitive trail horse and has competed in several ACTHA events. 

Postel

 

Postel is a 6-year-old grulla gelding belonging to David Grant. Postel is an experienced hog hunting and trail horse, but his athleticism makes him a candidate for any demanding discipline. He is a brave, courageous horse who is all heart. This will be Postel's third showing at the Hilton Head Beach Races.

Simpson

 

Simpson is a 3-year-old grulla gelding belonging to David Grant. Simpson is an experienced hog hunting horse and was featured in the Premier Showing of Marsh Tackies at the Fall Steeplechase in Aiken, SC in Oct. 2010.
 Smokey

 

Smokey is a 7-year-old gelding out of Dapper Dan and Gertie. He is owned by Ricky Warren of Ravenel, SC. He is a great pleasure trail horse. He is very good in the woods and wet lowlands. He has participated in the Extreme Trail Horse competition at Mullet Hall for the past 2 years. This will be his first year participating in the Hilton Head Beach races.

Spirit

Southern Spirit is a 3-year-old grulla gelding off of David Grant's stud DP and mare Silky. Soon after he was saddle-broke, Spirit began hog hunting and has shown to be swamp savvy. 

Strawberry

 
Strawberry is an 11-year-old strawberry roan gelding bred by Lee McKenzie.  This is Strawberry’s third race.

Toogoodoo

 
 
Toogoodoo is a 5-year-old dun gelding.  He is an experienced hunting and pleasure riding horse.  If you need to get down and dirty in the swamp this is the horse you want to be on. He is 14 hands with a great big heart and he won't quit.   He is from Arnold Postell's herd, and running out of Heritage Stables in Timmonsville, SC.
